Herman Melville’s Tree
On the night of February 26, 2017, a windstorm damaged one of the Norway spruce trees at Arrowhead. Planted by Herman Melville circa 1860, these trees have witnessed over 150 years of Arrowhead’s history. A team came together to salvage some of the tree – Bob Ciempa cut the branch into slices; Tom Renton and his students at Pittsfield High School sanded them and applied a coat of polyurethane; Jones Trophies of Melville Street, Pittsfield, engraved small plaques. Now about 40 of them are for sale at Arrowhead’s shop or on-line. Your chance to own a piece of history!
