DESCRIPTION:We are proud to announce that as part of a Massachusetts Cultural Council LCC grant\, three Berkshire Community College creative writing students were awarded Melville Fellowships this past fall at Herman Melville’s Arrowhead. They worked with Arrowhead’s Writer-in-Residence\, Jana Laiz\, and wrote original stories\, while also serving a Writer-in-Residence apprenticeship. The three Melville Fellows will present a public reading of their works on Tuesday\, February 26th at 7pm at the Lenox Library. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Commemorate that  occasion with a guided hike\, “champagne” toast\, and a reading of  “Monument Mountain” by  William Cullen Bryant. Meet in the Monument Mountain parking lot on Route 7 at 9:00.  The hike is free; parking fees may apply.  Led by Gordon Hyatt\, co-sponsored by  The Trustees of Reservations and the Berkshire County Historical Society.  Wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

Rossi \nMelville will be portrayed by local actor Stephen Collins\, known for his portrayal of Walt Whitman. Stephen’s website is http://www.unlaunchedvoices.com. \nSAILING TOWARDS MY FATHER is a dramatic poem on the life of Herman Melville (1819-1891)\, the American author best known for his whaling epic Moby-Dick; the poem concentrates on Melville’s evolution as both man and writer and his complex relations with God\, parents and siblings\, wife and children\, and father-figures. \nThe performance will run 60-65 minutes.  Adults $25; BCHS members $20; Seniors $18.  Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum.

DESCRIPTION:Opens June 15\, runs through June 24 at the Oldcastle Theatre in Bennington\, VT.  From the Oldcastle’s website: The season kicks off with Herman Melville’s captivating novel “THE ALMOST TRUE AND TRULY REMARKABLE ADVENTURES OF ISRAEL POTTER” that has been transformed into a rollicking new play by Joe Bravaco and Lary Rosler. Join young Israel as he goes from a small Berkshire town to the American Revolution then on to motherland England and back again. Along the way he meets historical figures\, falls in love\, fights the British\, becomes a spy\, escapes imminent death a few times and sings some songs. The cast will include long time Oldcastle veterans Richard Howe the company’s Associate Artistic Director\, Christine Decker\, and Gary Allan Poe.
