In Melville’s and Hawthorne’s Footsteps: Hike Monument Mountain with Gordon Hyatt

The annual celebration of the famous literary hike up (and down) Monument Mountain. In August, 1850, Herman Melville met Nathaniel Hawthorne at Monument Mountain, striking up an immediate friendship. Commemorate that occasion with a guided hike, “champagne” toast, and a reading of “Monument Mountain” by William Cullen Bryant. Meet in the Monument Mountain parking lot on Route 7 at 9:00. The hike is free; parking fees may apply. Led by Gordon Hyatt, co-sponsored by The Trustees of Reservations and the Berkshire County Historical Society. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
