Arthur M. Howard 1895 – 1976
Sgt. Arthur Howard served in WWI in the US Army in France and Germany, repairing vehicles. Between the wars he worked at the family business, Howard’s Agricultural Store, in Pittsfield. During WWII, Howard – now a Lt. Colonel – was part of the Allied Military Government. He worked to feed citizens of occupied Germany. His uniform was made by Rosenfeld’s, a clothing store in Pittsfield.
Arthur Howard married Louise May in 1922. He took over the family store from his father, Frank, but had to close it in 1960. The Howard Building, on the corner of 1st and Fenn Streets, has recently been renovated. Howard began an orchard in Richmond, MA, that continues under the name of Bartlett’s Orchard.
