William Shirer 1904 - 1993
Shirer was a leading CBS journalist. Reporting from Berlin, Shirer was an official war correspondent, and one of the first to give an eyewitness account of Germany’s movements through Europe before and during the war, 1933-1940.
Nazi imposed censorship laws started to affect Shirer’s ability to report accurately, and the German government pressured him to release incomplete or false reports. He left Europe in 1940 when the Gestapo began building an espionage case against him.
Shirer returned to Germany to witness the Nuremberg trials after the war. He is best known for his 1960 book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany. He settled in Lenox, MA, where he was living at the time of his death in 1993.
