ABOUT ARROWHEAD
Herman Melville purchased his Pittsfield home and farm and 1850 as a retreat from the hectic pace of New York City. He had strong connections with the Berkshires, having visited throughout his life, and was anxious to be near his new friend Nathaniel Hawthorne. He named his farm Arrowhead after relics found plowing his field.
Melville was at his creative peak during his time at Arrowhead and spent many hours each day writing in his study. It was here he penned his masterpiece, Moby-Dick and other creative works including Bartleby the Scrivener, Benito Cereno, Pierre, The Confidence Man, and I and My Chimney.
Today, Arrowhead is the home of the Berkshire County Historical Society who maintain the house and landscape including a heirloom apple orchard and a three-acre USDA certified pollinator habitat.
